October is the time when the summer holidays seem a long way away and the nights are drawing in, wouldn't it be nice to escape for a weekend? Why not choose the different option and not opt for the usual hotel and sightseeing event and instead devote the weekend to more cerebral and at the same time fun activities. If this sounds good to you then you could do no better than considering Cambridge and the Cambridge Festival of Ideas which runs from the 19th €" 30th October 2011.

This is an eclectic collection of experiences for all the family. This would suit a couple or a family with children from three years onwards. Where children are concerned it is a bonus to have tailor made activities on hand; many of the children's activities are hands on workshops for them on their own or if you prefer there are shared events as well.

So what delights might you expect? A few highlights from the programme are listed below:

Headline Debates
Famous speakers such as Professor Marcus du Sautoy, Michael Moore and Richard Dawkins will be on hand to discuss topics which are bang up to the minute such as Seven Billion €" €The Crowded Planet€, the sustainability of our world is something which concerns us all. Another debate which might intrigue is €Is Wikileaks causing a net revolution or setting the stage for net censorship?€ €" a very topical subject.

Events for the Family
There are a whole range of exciting things on offer from
€ Popcorn Comedy for Kids their very own show, no worries here for parents that the material might be inappropriate
€ Charlie Higson's History of Horror, this is bound to appeal to the boys in your group
€ Nick Sharratt will be introducing young people to Kung-fu-cow, Cuckoo-octopus and cinderellaphant
€ Peter and the Wolf for School, this classic can be enjoyed by all the family, a sure fire hit with all ages
€ Musical Mayhem €" a practical activity that says it all.

Talks
There is something for everyone, many slightly eccentric such as The Philosophy of Sci-fi from the Time Machine to the Tardis or the more topical Is the Future of food GM? If you merely want to be entertained there will be Dance Extravaganzas where classic dances will be performed. Animal lovers must not miss Doggie Day at the Polar Museum which sounds intriguing and will appeal to non-doggie people as well. Perhaps history is your thing? Prehistory Day is where you can experience the life of our ancestors first hand and will tick all the boxes.
