Built by the Tipu Sultan, who found Bangalore, the Tipu Sultan Fort was later extended by the emperor of Mysore. Formerly the summer residence of the emperor, the fort is a wooden structure renowned for its intricate architecture built entirely of teakwood, with its intricate carvings, decorated pillars and exquisite arches very much reminiscent of Islamic architecture.

Walking through the Tipu Sultan's fort takes one on a trip back in time. Exquisite gardens lead up to an entrance where inside, medieval designs adorn the structures and magnificent arches inspire a sense of majesty. Beautiful chandeliers hang from a ceiling adorned with beautiful floral patterns. One of the main attractions of the fort is its art gallery. Housing a plethora of paintings and carvings, the gallery also displays a large collection of photographs of prominent personalities of a bygone era. Maharajas, viceroys and diplomats stand side by side and make a very eclectic collection well worth a view.

The Ganapati Temple locate within the fort is also a popular attraction to many tourists, though seemingly different to the obvious Islamic influences of the fort, is a clear depiction of the religious tolerance of the emperor. The top floors of the fort is not accessible due to ongoing reconstruction, however the ground floor makes up with its abundance of attractions. The balconies too can be viewed from the ground floor and showcase quaint wooden carvings.

In order to preserve its original charm, most of the fort has been left in its original state with no efforts made at restoration. One can get a peek at the original painting and designs, slightly faded but still visible.

Tourists can also visit the museum which provides information on Tipu Sultan's reign in the city and his influence on its culture. The fort also has a dungeon where captured British army officers were believed to have been imprisoned. Interestingly, the fort also displays a smaller model of "Tipu's Tiger", a musical toy devised for the entertainment of the emperor. The toy represents a tiger mauling a British soldier and is widely believed to showcase the emperor's deep rooted hate for the British Empire.

Steeped in history, the Tipu Sultan Fort would be much appreciated by those interested in an era bygone whilst also appealing to the aesthetically inclined.
