How to Make My Gas Scooter Seat More Comfortable

    • 1). Search for the right seat before you buy. Some scooters come with seats that can adjust to different heights; not only can this create a more comfortable seat, but it can make the rest of your body more comfortable by helping to create proper alignment while on the bike. Other scooters have seats that can move forward or backward (further away from or closer to the steering column), again creating proper alignment for your knees, hips and back.

Pick the right style of seat on your gas scooter. Gas scooter seats come in a range of sizes and styles. Some can look almost like a bicycle seat; others can look like a motorcycle seat; others still can look more like a bench (see picture). The biggest problem with most of these seats is that once you make the purchase, you cannot change the style of seat on the scooter. If the seat isn't comfortable in the showroom, it probably won't be comfortable on the road.

    • 3). Change the padding in your gas scooter seat. If possible, remove your seat first (this is not possible with all brands and styles). Next, remove the seat cover; this is the fabric lining that covers your scooter's seat. You may choose to use a seam ripper or a razor blade to disconnect the fabric from the seat. Now you'll be able to get a good look at what kind of padding is on your scooter's seat (foam is the most likely candidate). Add another layer of the same material to the scooter's seat by gluing it onto the seat base. Throw away the old padding if it is worn out and no longer provides proper support or comfort.

    • 4). Increase the amount of padding on your scooter's seat. Following the same instructions from Step 3, remove the seat and seat cover first. Next, remove the old layer of padding from the seat base. If the old layer of padding was three inches, consider replacing it with a thicker layer of four or five inches. Keep in mind that most types of foam padding will compress at least a little bit over time. Glue the new layer of padding to the seat base. Pull the seat cover over the new padding and affix it to the underside of the seat base using a staple gun. Remember that increasing the amount of padding on your seat may make the seat cover too small, so be prepared to replace that as well.

    • 5). Use a different kind of padding in your seat cushion. While foam is one option, some scooter manufacturers also offer gel seats, much as you might see on a bicycle. Follow the same process outlined above in Steps 3 and 4 for removing the old seat, cover and padding, and replacing them with a gel seat.

    • 6). Switch the fabric in your seat cover. If you find a pleather (plastic leather) seat uncomfortable, try switching to real leather, or if you don't like the feel of leather, switch to another type of fabric (note: make sure the fabric you choose is durable and will stand up to different weather conditions). Remove the old fabric cover following the instructions in Step 3. Using the old cover as a template, trace its shape onto the back of your new fabric (leave a little extra room, especially if you had to trim off some of the seat cover when you removed it from the seat itself). Cut out the new seat cover from the fabric, and affix it to the seat cushion and base using a staple gun.

    • 7). Install an extra seat cover that slips on over your existing scooter seat. Options like this are easier to install, because they don't require any alternations to the actual scooter.
