How to Dry In-Shell Walnuts
- 1). Sift through the walnuts. Throw out any that smell or look bad, along with shells that have dents, cracks or holes.
- 2). Set the drying screens in a dry area that remains cool, such as a pantry.
- 3). Pour the nuts on top of the screen and spread them in a single layer so they aren't touching. This allows maximum airflow for drying.
- 4). Dry the nuts for two to three weeks, then test to see if they're dry by cracking a shell open and breaking apart a nut. It should break cleanly without bending.
- 5). Pour the dry nuts into a burlap sack and store in a dry, cool place.
