Wine Glasses

• Wine glasses come in a variety of materials and sizes: Some are glass, others plastic and still others are made of crystal. For a casual barbecue, plastic glasses that can safely be used on the patio might be more appropriate. For a more formal gathering, glass or crystal make a lovely gift. Some wine glass manufacturers -- like the Austrian company Riedel -- make a wine glass for every kind of wine, designed to enhance the bouquet and flavor of each varietal.
  
  

Corkscrew

• A good, dependable corkscrew is your most important wine tool. There are several types of corkscrews to choose from: lever style, waiter style, twisting, winged, two-pronged and air pump. Waiter-style corkscrews are considered the best style overall: they are easy to carry, take up little room and have a built-in knife for removing the foil from a wine bottle.

• Wine charms are small charms, usually on a wire circle, that attach to the bottom of a wine glass to help you distinguish one glass of wine from another. Wine charms are relatively inexpensive which makes them good party favors, or they can be combined with a few other accessories to make a wine-themed hostess gift.

• If you are confident in your knowledge of the recipient's individual taste, consider giving a bottle of wine as a gift. If you aren't sure about what your guest or hostess prefers, a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine can solve your dilemma. Champagne comes in four styles: Brut (very dry), Extra-dry (off-dry), Sec (medium-dry), and Doux (sweet). Champagne's association with special occasions, such as New Year and wedding celebrations, makes it an excellent wine gift.
