How to Install a Currie Bicycle Motor

Installing the Currie E-bike conversion kit

    • 1). Remove the rear wheel of the bicycle and take off the tire, tube, freewheel and spoke protector. Install the hardware from your old wheel onto the wheel supplied with your conversion kit.

    • 2). Install the motor and mounting bracket on the left side of the rear wheel. The bracket slides over the rear axle and a 17mm nut holds it in place. Set the chain drive tension by sliding the motor and bracket far enough away from the axle and drive gear that the chain cannot come off. Tighten the 17mm nut to secure the bracket and motor in place.

    • 3). Re-install the rear wheel with the mounting bracket and motor in a horizontal position parallel to the ground, behind the rear wheel drop-out. Using the supplied bolts and brackets, attach the motor and bracket to the bike frame. You will need to size the brackets to the tube diameter of the left rear chain stay using pliers to bend them to fit the size of the chain stay.

    • 4). Install the two seat-stay mounting brackets for the rear rack battery carrier. If your bike has pre-drilled and threaded holes for a rear rack, use those. If not, bend the supplied seat stay mounting brackets to fit and install them on the seat stays above the rear brake hardware.

    • 5). Bolt the factory pre-assembled rack to the rear of your bike. Start at the bottom by attaching the rack's rear struts to the rack mounting points above the rear drop-out. Make sure they are secure, but don't tighten them completely until after you've also attached the seat stay mounting bolts.

    • 6). Using either the supplied seat stay brackets or you biycle's pre-drilled seat stay rack mounts, bolt the rack mounting arms to the seat stay. Slide the rack forward or back so that it is level and tighten all fixing bolts (drop out, seat stay, stay mounting arms).

    • 7). Install the throttle control unit (supplied with Currie motor kit) to the right side handlebar. The throttle should be inside both the brake lever and shifters to ensure it does not interfere with gear shifting or braking.

    • 8). Connect the supplied wiring harness as outlined in your kit's instructions. There are four elements to be connected -- the motor, power switch, the battery, and the throttle controller. The wiring harness is pre-assembled. All you need to do is connect the wires according to the wiring diagram that accompanies your kit.

    • 9). The battery terminal and motor wires must be routed between the seat stay mounting arms into the rack box. The wires should be zip-tied to the frame to prevent them from dangling and potentially being caught in the rear wheel's spokes or brakes.

    • 10

Once the wires are secured inside the rack box, attach the top plate with the supplied screws.

    • 11

The battery for the electric drive can be attached to either side of the rack. It slides into place and can be locked using the supplied key, to ensure it stays in contact with the terminals, and to prevent theft.

    • 12

The battery can be charged while attached to the rack, or when removed. Leaving it on the bike will reduce wear and tear on the lock and terminals, while removing it allows you to leave your bike outside or in areas without a handy electrical outlet.

    • 13

Before riding your bike with the motor engaged, take a test ride to ensure the brakes and gear shifting are working properly. Make sure the rack is secure, and double check all mounting bolts and brackets.

    • 14

Turn on the power to the motor by flipping the switch on the rack (located beside the rear reflector) to the on position. Your e-bike motor is activated using the throttle on the right handlebar. Choose a quiet road or parking lot to familiarize yourself with the acceleration and top speed characteristics of the electric assist before venturing onto busy streets or bike paths.
