How to Change Your Address With the IRS
- 1). Write your new address on your return, if you have moved before filing. Use the mailing label that comes with your tax package or use the appropriate spaces on the return itself.
- 2). Complete IRS Form 8822-Change of Address, if you move after you have filed your return and before you receive a refund check.
- 3). Mail Form 8822 to the designated address listed on page 2 of the form.
- 4). Write a letter to the IRS to notify them of your address change. Send this to the location where you filed your last return by mail. You can find the appropriate address by consulting the instructions on the tax forms. Include your full name, old and new addresses, Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number and signature. If you have filed a joint return, provide this information for both spouses. Include signatures from both parties.
- 5). Notify your old post office of your change of address. Not all post offices will forward government checks, so be sure to complete form 8822 as well.
