    Identify the Issue

    • 1). Clean off the battery terminals. Using a corrosion cleaner available at any auto parts store, spray on the cleaner and let it sit for a while. If the corrosion is extensive, disconnect the negative battery cable with the adjustable wrench and then the positive. Thoroughly spray all exposed or contaminated surfaces. After the cleaner has set for about five minutes, scrub it with a wire brush and rinse off with water.

    • 2). Inspect your connections. A bad connection to the terminal on a battery could be causing a short to occur. Replace any bad connections. Kits are available at any auto parts store and are simple to install following the instructions on the package. Locations that sell and service car batteries can also assist with installing new connections.

    • 3). Tighten all your connections. Make sure the positive and negative cables are tight and do not wiggle around. Trace the lines to where they connect to the engine and make sure those connections are tight. As needed, tighten the connections.

    • 4). Charge your battery overnight using a battery charger.

    • 5). Test your alternator. Inspect the alternator belt for breaks or looseness. The alternator is round with brass internal cables that are visible from the outside. Once your battery is fully charged and you have verified that the alternator belt is tight, start your vehicle and let it run for about 15 minutes or until it reaches standard operating temperature (the temperature gauge is close to the middle of the gauge).

    • 6). Disconnect the negative line on the battery without turning off the vehicle. Your vehicle should remain running without issue as the alternator is what generates the charge to operate your vehicle. Turn on your lights and air and let the car run for about 30 minutes to an hour. If the vehicle dies during that time, you have an alternator issue. If the vehicle continues to operate normally, you may have a bad battery. Return it to where you purchased it for replacement options.
