Alistair Overeem - Best Fighter In The World?
Why? Because he has defeated big names of the martial arts world, including Badr Hari, Vitor Belfort, Brock Lesnar as well as Fabricio Verdum and Todd Duffee, fighters known to be some of the toughest athletes in the MMA league.
Alistair Overeem was born in England on May 17, 1980.
Still, England was his home for only 6 years, as in 1986 his parents divorced.
Alistair and his older brother were taken by their mother back to her home country, Holland, the place that he has been since then, their home.
11 years after their arrival to Holland, Valentijn (his brother, also a professional fighter) introduced Alistair to Chris Dolman's gym, place where they both started to train.
Despite of what you may think nowadays, but Alistair was not the warrior type.
In fact, he didn't like too much training at Chris Dolman's gym, as he was more attracted to football and basketball.
Still, he remained in that gym and continued training with his older brother.
Eventually, he met Bas Rutten, another huge figure of the MMA world.
His first fight as a MMA fighter took place when he was only 19 years old.
On October 24, 1999, in a Showtime event, he defeated Ricardo Fyeet using his soon-to-be famous guillotine choke.
It was the start of one of the most prolific careers in the history of the mixed martial arts.
His kickboxing career was as fruitful as his MMA career: in 2010, for example, he became the champion of the K-1 World Grand Prix tournament, and few months later, he successfully defended his Strikeforce title (an independent MMA organisation) in a bout against Brett Rogers.
Nowadays, Alistair Overeem is looking forward to coming back into the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
He should have fought Junior Dos Santos on May 26 for the UFC heavyweight title, but the fight was canceled due to some unexpected legal issues.
The fight between Alistair and Dos Santos will still take place, but unfortunately for the MMA fans, it will only take place somewhere in the beginning of the 2013.
Until then, Overeem will remain in Holland to take care of his mother, who is currently battling with cancer.
Despite that he doesn't have the supreme title in the UFC, Alistair Overeem remains one of the best fighters in the world.
His main goal nowadays is to earn the UFC heavyweight title, therefore he will do everything possible to accomplish his goal.
