Ideas for Using Pocket Folders to Hold Articulation Cards
- If you have a series of articulation cards that a student is working on, then you can place words that he is saying successfully on the right, and words he still is trying to master on the left. Each time that he gets a new set of words to master, place them on the left. Once he masters all of the words, he gets the next lesson. This can not only be done with students trying to master English in the younger grades, but also students in higher grades who are working on a second language such as French or Spanish.
- While a teacher can choose to print and cut articulation cards into individual pieces, she can also leave those cards attached on one piece of paper. The student can then master word after word as she practices moving from left to right and top to bottom on the page. Separate the words by category. Each pocket folder will contain words in a particular category on a whole page. Ideas include sports, food, math and science. Organize the folders so they make sense with the materials you are using in the classroom.
- Vertically hanging pocket folders allows you to keep the articulation cards organized by different categories, while also allowing you to hang them from a wall or pin up board in the room. For example, if the vertically hanging pocket folder has six pockets, you can place cards in each pocket using six different categories. Instruct the students to pick articulation cards from different categories so they get a variety of words. After they work with the cards, they will be required to return the cards back to the proper category in the vertically hanging pocket folder. This is ideal for the teacher who may have to move to multiple classrooms throughout the day.
- Hanging folders have metal tabs across the front and back of the opening of the folder. These tabs allow the folder to hang in a file cabinet or crate. The hanging folders may or may not have additional pockets inside. If not, then each folder needs to be dedicated to a category of articulation cards. If there are pockets inside, then whole sheets of articulation cards, or cut up versions of individual cards can be separated inside the hanging folder.
