How to Take Off Jeep Doors

    • 1). Open the Jeep door you want to remove and examine the door jam to find the hinge connectors that are securing the door to the Jeep vehicle's frame. Determine if the door includes power locking mechanisms and/or power windows so that you can follow the appropriate steps for door removal. Once you have determined how the the door is operated, the door is ready to be removed.

    • 2). Disconnect the power cables that operate the Jeep's power window and locking mechanism. Once the power has been removed from the door, unhook the two connecting straps that keep the door from over-extending. These connectors have no other purpose than to restrain the doors from opening outside of the user's grasp and will need to be removed in order to separate the Jeep from its doors.

    • 3). Loosen the Torx head bolts from the door hinge of the Jeep. Do not remove one bolt at a time as it can cause more pressure being placed on the last one to be removed, which can cause a stripping of the threads that are used to tighten the door hinge to the vehicle. "Break" each bolt from its secured position until it moves easily, then do the same to the next until all are loose.

    • 4). Remove the bolts from the hinge from bottom to top. After the top bolt is removed, the door is ready to be taken off the Jeep frame. With upward force, maneuver the door in and out until the door comes free from the connecting hinge. Jeep doors can become unmanageable once removed and this portion of the job should be done with two people to avoid injury or damage.

    • 5). Replace the Torx head bolts back into the hinge so that replacement of the door is easy to do. Losing these after a door's removal can cause distress if you need to replace the door in a hurry and you are unable to find the right parts to secure the Jeep's doors back on its frame.
