When looking for a good anxiety therapist there are certain steps that should be followed.
Your therapist is a person with whom you will have a very intimate and fulfilling relationship and it is therefore important that you take care in choosing one.
Here are the steps for choosing an anxiety therapist that can make a difference in your life.
All good therapists come by recommendation.
It is never a good idea to simply open the phone book and start making cold calls.
Therapists operate in a very tight knit community and they develop reputations within that community.
Use that to your advantage.
If you are just beginning in your quest to treat your anxiety disorder you may not know who to call to get a recommendation.
Don't let this stop you, however.
If you are a university student you can take advantage of the services offered through the Student Services department.
There you can meet with a school therapist for free.
He will likely be pretty plugged into the local treatment community and can make a recommendation.
If you are not in school you can make a free appointment with your local county health services department.
Again, like a school counselor, this person will be able to recommend a therapist with a good reputation in your community.
Once you have the recommendation, try to find out what area of therapy that they specialize in.
Since we are dealing with people with anxiety disorders, you are going to want to make certain that your therapist has a solid foundation in cognitive behavioral therapy, which is the primary treatment model that anxiety therapists follow.
The next step is to make that preliminary appointment.
On your first meeting, use your instincts.
Does this person seem to be a person that you can trust.
Remember your relationship with your counselor will be very intimate if the person doesn't seem trustworthy to you then they are not the right fit.
Politely explain that you do not feel 100% comfortable with that person and ask him for a recommendation.
Almost surely they will understand and gladly provide you with one.
If you follow these steps you will very likely be able to locate a good therapist to help you deal with your anxiety.
Then the work that follows will be intense, but if you are dedicated to it you will see lasting improvement in your day-to-day life.
