How to Dispute a Credit Report by Phone
- 1). For a TransUnion dispute, Call 1-800-916-8800 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Have a recent copy of your credit report handy and have the items you are disputing circled with your reason listed.
For an Experian dispute, review your Experian credit report to find the information regarding disputes. Your report will list the phone number to call to initiate a credit dispute. You must have an Experian credit report to dispute items. Call the phone number shown.
For an Equifax dispute, review your Equifax credit report to find the information regarding disputes. Your report will list the phone number to call to initiate a credit dispute. Locate the 10-digit confirmation number on the report. You will need this number to imitate the dispute. Call the phone number shown. - 2). Inform the phone agent that you have items on your credit report you would like to dispute. Verify your identity by providing answers to the questions asked. Be prepared to give your name, address, date of birth, Social Security and also to answer a couple of questions regarding items within your credit file.
- 3). List the items in dispute one by one. For each item you are disputing, you will need to give a reason for the dispute. Keep your answer brief and only give one reason per item on your dispute.
- 4). Write down the confirmation number for your dispute claim. Additionally, make sure you take down the agents name, date and time of call. This is your only record of the 30-day time limit the credit agency has to investigate the dispute.
- 5). Wait 30 to 40 days for a reply from the credit agency. Review your results carefully. If your disputed item was not removed or updated, you may dispute again.
