How to Test Brake Pads

    • 1). Pay attention to warning signs. If the brake warning light stays on, the steering wheel shakes, your vehicle is slow to stop, or your brakes make a squealing noise, it's time to check the brake pads.

    • 2). Raise the car off the ground using a floor jack. Lift it only enough to support the car and give you room to remove the tire. It is safer to keep the car stable by placing a concrete block underneath the vehicle. Jacks alone are not enough to ensure the car does not move.

    • 3). Loosen the lug nuts on the tires using the tire iron, then remove the tires.

    • 4). Examine the brake pads carefully. The size of the material on brake pads should be a half-inch thick. If the pads are much thinner than this, it is time to get new brake pads.
