Mixed Martial Arts in DC News presents local news in DC with martial arts events coverage for MMA, muay thai, and brazilian jiu jitsu. In the first month of January 2011, MMA in DC news presented articles about female pro MMA fighter Ashley Weakley (from Virginia), an interview with Copa Nova BJJ Tournament organizer Dan Wallen, and BJJ techniques with BJJ black belt Luis Pantoja of Yamasaki DC. Ashley Weakley fights out of the Leo Dalla and LA Boxing camp in northern Virginia. She is the first pro female fighter to come out of the camps and is a pioneer of sorts in the area. Weakley's last fight at Tuff-n-Nuff in Las Vegas did not go her way, as she lost in the finals of the event. She took full responsibility for the fight and did not make any excuses. The Copa Nova BJJ Tournament is a regular local tournament in the DC, Northern VA, and Maryland area. Competitors come from different states to compete for medals and bragging rights in the area. The tournament organizer, Dan Wallen, of Fightworks.net is a BJJ brown belt and highlighted his efforts to bring in top notch referees from local areas and states such as New York. HIs vision for the future of the tournament series is to include cash prizes for upper level belts to provide incentives for participation. The Copa Nova provides a local venue for competitors in the area to test their skills and have a good time. The Copa Nova added to the local news in DC during the first week of January.

Also featured in the first week was Luis Pantoja of Yamasaki DC. Pantoja is brazilian jiu jitsu black belt under Mario Yamasaki of the Yamasaki Academy. Pantoja has his own dojo in Washington, DC off of Connecticut Avenue in NW. In this article, he showed an armbar finish from the guard.
