Puerto del Carmen: Lanzarote"s oldest and most famous resort
Are you looking for a winter break to escape the chilly and wet months in Northern and Central Europe? The Canary Isles have plenty to offer for sun seeking tourists. While most of the tourists head to the more famous Canary Isles like Gran Canaria and Tenerife, there's quite a gem which tends to be overlooked for no reason, I am of course referring to the beautiful volcanic island of Lanzarote.
Island of Lanzarote
Lanzarote is a little island situated in the Atlantic Ocean just outside the Western coast of Africa. As a small group of a total of 13 islands, these are known collectively as the Canary Islands. Lanzarote is placed to the right of all these islands and situated only 80 miles west off the African coast, so sunshine is nearly always guaranteed. Being only 37 miles long and 12 miles wide, it is possible to drive around Lanzarote within only a few hours, but, as travel writers tend to overstate: To take it all in, could take a life time.
Puerto del Carmen
Puerto del Carmen was a quiet fishing village until the 1960s, but as the island got its international airport. That soon had to change. During the 1970s and 1980s hotels, restaurants and shops started to occupate the stretch of coast that was formerly the fishermen's working place.
Puerto Del Carmen sits along the south coast with a beach which is long, golden, beautiful and clean. This family orientated area starting at Matagorda, heading south along the Avenida de las Playa (beach avenue) and finally reaching the Old Harbor, this area locally is known as the 'Strip'. Along the Strip you are indulged in a number of food restaurants, up to 80 bars', disco's, and family entertainment and of course, plenty of trinket and gift shops. A glorious 6km walk way running all along the south coast enables a great feast of viewing. This includes the main runway at Areopuerto de Lanzarote, all the fantastic south coast beaches and vast amounts of entertainments along the main strip, all leading to the old harbor.
