How to Maintain Your Transmission

    • 1). Use a computer with Internet access to download or find your specific vehicle's recommended transmission maintenance schedule from the manufacturer's website if you don't already have a hard copy. Pay special attention to the recommendations that apply to your specific vehicle (many manufacturers group similar cars into the same publication).

    • 2). Drive your car for a while to heat up the engine fluids (at least 20 minutes). Park the car and leave the engine running. Pop your hood release and prop it up if needed with the hood support arm. Look for the ring handle labeled "Transmission." Firmly but slowly pull the transmission fluid dipstick out by the ring handle and wipe it off with a shop rag. Wear gloves if you want to keep your hands clean. Put the dipstick into the engine again and pull it out once more. Check your fluid level on the end of the dipstick.

    • 3). Add fluid if necessary, as you should keep the fluid close to the full mark at all times. Turn the car off if it's running. Locate the transmission fluid reservoir at the top-left side of the engine assembly when facing the car (some models may have it in a different location). Take the cap off and pour in the new fluid using a funnel. Change the transmission fluid out completely with a mechanic's help if it's dark or smells like burning oil (it should be a clear, reddish color).

    • 4). Watch your car's odometer and schedule a transmission car service with your mechanic at least every 24,000 miles or no more than two years apart. Schedule it sooner if your manufacturer recommends to do so. Keep track of your visits in a small logbook you can keep in your glove box for quick reference.

    • 5). Monitor your manual transmission by how well the shifting and clutch performs. Listen or feel for difficulties in shifting or a sensation of the gears slipping. Schedule a visit with a mechanic to check your clutch if these signs begin to appear.
