How to Install a Dishwasher in a Kitchen Island
- 1). Remove the sink drain tailpiece. The tailpiece is the part that runs from where the two sink drains combine in a double sink to the trap. The trap is a hook-shaped pipe that holds water inside to make a barrier against sewer gasses. The dishwasher sink kit includes a tail-piece that has a dishwasher drain fitting. Cut this tailpiece to the correct length to fit in where the removed tailpiece was. Install the tailpiece, and tighten in place using the two slip nuts and compression washers to secure it to the piping. If the sink has a disposal, skip this step, as most disposals have a dishwasher hose connection in them.
- 2). Locate the copper tubing that supplies the sink faucet hot water. Turn off the water supply to this pipe. There is usually a valve under the sink, but you may have to shut off the main hot water supply. Cut through the copper tubing with a hacksaw. Clean the edges up with steel wool to make them smooth. Install the nuts and washers on the tubing. Install the correct sized compression tee on the copper tubing, and push the tubing in until it bottoms inside of the fitting, and will not insert further. Slide the washers into the tee, and tighten the nuts snugly.
- 3). Place the nut and washer from the tee on the copper tubing for the dishwasher supply. Insert the tubing into the tee and tighten the nut. Run the tubing to the cabinet where the dishwasher will go and to the left side of the cabinet.
- 4). Place the dishwasher on its back on the floor. Install the correct sized iron pipe to compression elbow on the water inlet, using Teflon tape on the threads. Remove the compression nut and washer from the fitting and set them aside. Install the drain hose on the dishwasher drain and tighten the clamp. Set the dishwasher upright and slide it into the opening, guiding the tube and hose into the correct place.
- 5). Attach the copper tubing to the fitting using the washer and nut provided. Tighten the nut. Route the hose through the cabinet--drilling a hole if necessary--to the drain fitting on the sink tailpiece or disposer. Turn the water back on and check for leaks.
- 6). Connect the dishwasher power cord to the outlet. Drive wood screws through the under cabinet mounts into the bottom of the countertop to secure the dishwasher.
