- 1). Unplug your Kenmore Elite dryer from its power source and turn off the supply of gas to a gas dryer.
- 2). Clean out the dryer's lint screen, lint screen housing, exhaust hose and outside exhaust vent to remove any lint build up or obstructions that may be preventing the hot air produced by the dryer from escaping effectively. Clean out the lint trap and lint screen housing after each use and clean the exhaust hose and outside exhaust vent periodically to prevent the dryer from overheating again.
- 3). Remove the dryer's bottom kick panel to access the thermal fuse component. Insert a putty knife or flathead screwdriver into the space just above the panel. Use the putty knife or screwdriver to apply moderate pressure to the two metal clips found approximately 4 inches in from either side of the panel; the clips will release. Use the same process to release the two metal clips that hold the bottom of the kick panel; set the panel aside.
- 4). Locate the thermal fuse component mounted next to the thermistor on the dryer's blower housing. Look for a thin white plastic component with one dark blue and one light blue wire attached to it; this is the thermal fuse.
- 5). Test the thermal fuse in your Kenmore Elite dryer for continuity. Pull gently on the dark blue and light blue wires to disconnect them from the thermal fuse component. Set an ohmmeter, sometimes referred to as a digital multimeter, to the Rx1 setting and touch the ohmmeter leads to each end of the thermal fuse. Note the reaction of the ohmmeter's needle; replace the thermal fuse immediately if the needle fails to move.
- 6). Unscrew and remove the small screw at the center of the thermal fuse to remove the component from the blower housing; discard the faulty thermal fuse, but keep the removed screw handy. Hold the replacement thermal fuse up to the blower housing and align the screw hole in the blower housing with the screw hole at the center of the new component. Reinsert the removed screw and tighten it. Attach the dark blue and light blue wires to the ends of the new thermal fuse.
- 7). Align the sides of the bottom kick panel with the sides of the dryer cabinet. Apply moderate force to the panel to snap it back into place.
