Why Customer Reviews Are Detrimental To Your Future As A Contractor

Lansing, Michigan - For decades now, word of mouth has been the preferred way to obtain referrals for home- and business-based contract services. When you need your roof fixed, what's the first thing you do? Most likely, you'll ask around the office, or talk to your family and friends, right? It probably comes as no surprise, than, that as we've allowed technology to virtually replace the need to ask around, now we can simply go online, do a quick search for customer reviews, and instantly, third party websites such as Yelp! or Angie's List pop up one after the other, making it simple for you to obtain the referrals you need to find the services you're looking for. Which is why it's so important, as business owners and contractors, to ensure you keep each of your customers happy, and when an issue arises - which it will, it's inevitable - that you do everything in your power to resolve it. Why? Because your future sales depend on it.

By default, we now expect things to be accessible with the click of a button, so we can get what we need to get, and get out quick. As technology-dependent as we've become, convenience is always king. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, or a good thing. It just is. But with that comes responsibilities, and new methods of customer communication now need to co-exist with the person-to-person interactions that we've utilized for so long, which will never go away. Some ways you can ensure you're making the most of your customer reviews is to:

1. Make sure your customer reviews are front-and-center on your website. If you don't have a website, now's the time to get one. Once you have a website, make sure your customer reviews are a highlight of your homepage. This puts potential customers at ease, and shows past customers you care about what they have to say.
2. Utilize popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter to gain feedback and run promos As a business owner, it's your responsibility to do what you can to reach your customers. Sometimes, the least likely candidate will be your best ambassador. Utilize your social networks!
3. Sign up and claim your profile on Yelp! Even though this one may sound a bit convoluted, Yelp can be one of the easiest ways to round up reviews to post on your website. In doing so, you've essentially opened up a open forum to allow your customer to speak openly and without bias.
4. Create an account on Angie's List Angie's List is free for businesses to post their business on its' platform. However, it's a paid service for potential posters and past customers; which means any reviews that come in will most likely be untainted, and completely truthful.
5. Reach out to past and present clients via email so you can gain insight and feedback regarding your services. Email marketing has continued to be one of the best ways to follow up with past clients regarding their experience with your company. Reaching out to them can also show them you care, not just about the sale itself, but about what they have to say.
6. Optimize your Google+ profile for search engines (kind of secondary, but inter-related) Google+ is an incredibly under-utilized tool for business owners to optimize their SEO rankings and also connect with clients. It may not be the most loved social network around, but optimizing your Google+ profile can put you one step ahead of your competition.

Combined, these are all great ways to forging relationships with your customers, and ensure they have plenty of ways to post reviews and leave their feedback. Remember that the more knowledge you obtain from your customers, the more knowledgable you will become about them. The value there is kind of self explanatory, but nonetheless, it's worth mentioning.
