Tours of Tuscany: Rosso Di Montalcino
Tuscany is home to some of the worlds best wineries, and no trip to Tuscany would be complete without sampling wine from these wineries.
Tuscany is famous for its Brunello Di Montalcino wine, however, the region also produces a cheaper alternative, but with some of the same great tastes, the Rosso Di Montalcino wine.
The Ross di Montalcino is usually 30-40% cheaper than its big brother but has the same great taste and characteristics.
Thus, before booking a tour of tuscany, make sure the winery you are planning to visit produces both of these types of wine.
In 1984 the Rosso Di Montalcino was established to give Brunello di Montalcino producers increased flexibility that what is offered by the DOCG Brunello di Montalcino.
With this being said, the Rosso di Montalcino wine must still be made from 100% Sangiovese grapes and also must be produced in the municipality of Montalcino.
The main difference between the Brunello and the Rosso is the aging requirement: the Rosso is only required to spend six (6) months aging in an oak barrel (versus two (2) years) and one (1) year total aging before release.
As a result of allowing wine to be released in a shorter period of time, many Brunello di Montanclino producers produce both types of wine.
In less than ideal years, where the grape productions were below average, many wineries will relegate their grapes to Rosso di Montalcino production.
Rosso di Montaclino wine is typically lighter, less dry, not nearly as an intense aroma, fresher and tamer than its big brother the Brunello.
Further, many people prefer this wine for the simple fact it is usually a third to half the price of a Brunello.
