Can You Exercise With the Flu?
- Sometimes it's difficult to determine whether you're suffering from the common cold or the flu. You probably have the flu if you experience one or more of the following: fever, headache, body aches, pains, fatigue or weakness.
- Research performed on mice at Iowa State University (ISU) under lead researcher Marian Kohut, associate professor of kinesiology, suggests that moderate daily activity lessens the severity of the flu.
- If you have a fever (which is common with the flu), exercising can make you more susceptible to dehydration.
- Staying hydrated and getting additional rest are important for active adults and become even more important when you have the flu.
If you go to the gym, be considerate and safe: Clean off your gym equipment before and after exercise. - If you are not already physically active, you should not begin an exercise program while you have the flu.
