How to Extract a Broken High-Strength Stud Bolt
- 1). File the top of the stud flat. This gives you a flat solid surface for drilling into the stud. If the stud is countersunk into the hole, you will not be able to file the stud flat.
- 2). Secure the drill bit that was supplied with your reverse thread tap into your hand drill. Use a drill bit and tap approximately half the diameter of the stud. If your reverse thread tap did not come with a drill bit, reference the drill bit size chart on The Dirt Forum.com website (Resources) for the correct drill bit size for your tap.
- 3). Drill a hole in the center of the stud approximately one quarter the length of the stud. The stud is made of high strength steel so take your time, use a slow drill setting and keep the drill bit wet with cutting oil.
- 4). Place the reverse thread tap into the hole and turn it counterclockwise to turn the tap into the hole. As the tap bottoms out in the stud, it will back the stud out.
