Full Steam Ahead - North Norfolk Bound!
As visitors to hotels in North Norfolk will know full well, this wonderful stretch of railway line is a popular tourist attraction and the 10.
5 mile round trip, from Sheringham through Weybourne and Kelling Heath Park to Holt, takes in some beautiful views of the countryside.
Built in 1887 by William Marriott, the steam railway first ran until 1924.
Eighty-odd years later and today the steam trains are a real draw for those spending their weekend breaks Norfolk way, and a trip on this scenic stretch of track is something that the whole family will enjoy.
The railway winds its way through coast and countryside deemed to be of outstanding natural beauty, running from the popular seaside town of Sheringham to the historic Georgian town of Holt.
You can start your journey from either station, but if you're staying in one of the Norfolk luxury hotels in Holt, I'd suggest driving rather than walking to the station as it's at least a mile out of the main town.
The train ride is definitely worthwhile, though, as the trip takes in the lovely woodland and open parkland of Kelling Heath and Sheringham Park, while the sea is easily visible to the north.
Early in the year there are plenty of spring flowers brightening up the landscape, while in May the famous rhododendrons in Sheringham Park make the countryside particularly colourful.
And, of course, you'll also see plenty of poppies, for which this area is particularly famous, with their striking red heads visible all along the hedgerows.
There are plenty of sights to be seen here, and in addition to the lovely picturesque countryside, there's plenty more of interest; the historic stations, for instance, a museum charting the railway's history, a significant signal box and a carriage especially aimed at children.
And, of course, you'll also find plenty to eat and drink as well as all sorts of souvenirs.
And if you are coming up to stay in one of the North Norfolk hotels, check out the railway's website before you go, as special themed events also take place throughout the year, such as a beer festival in the summer and festive train rides at Christmas time.
