How to Replace the Headlight Switch on a 94 E36
- 1). Turn off your 1994 BMW E36 and prop open the hood.
- 2). Disconnect the negative battery cable in the engine compartment by loosening the nut tightening the negative cable to the negative terminal using your socket wrench. The negative cable has a minus sign near it and a black rubber cap covering it.
- 3). Remove the screw below the headlight on the underside of the dashboard with a Phillips head screwdriver.
- 4). Pull the headlight switch out of the dashboard enough to see the two wiring harnesses behind it. Disconnect both wiring harnesses. Disconnect the one on the left by twisting it counterclockwise. Disconnect the one on the right by depressing the top and bottom tabs, and pulling it off the rear of the headlight switch.
- 5). Connect the two wiring harnesses you just removed to the replacement headlight switch.
- 6). Insert your screwdriver into the socket where the headlight switch resides and press against the air vent. Press the air vent downward and to the left.
- 7). Remove the screwdriver and seat the headlight switch into the dashboard, taking care that it sits flush against the trim.
- 8). Tighten back on the mounting screw you took off earlier by inserting the screw through the threaded hole in the bracket and tightening it by turning it clockwise with your screwdriver.
