It is the season for cookouts, pool parties, camping trips and, unfortunately... mosquitoes. Beyond the annoying buzzing, biting and itching, mosquitoes can cause health concerns. Though rare, mosquitoes can transmit disease such as West Nile and encephalitis.

There are some very important things that you can do to limit mosquito breeding on your property:
  1. Dispose of any waste that could hold water, such as cans, containers and tires.
  2. Empty standing water from boats, trailers, toys, wheelbarrows and pots.
  3. Small fountains can be placed in water gardens to prevent mosquito breeding.
  4. Stock pools, rain barrels, and troughs with mosquito fish (Gambusia), guppies, or goldfish. They readily eat mosquito larvae.
  5. Make sure roof gutters drain properly.
  6. Clean vegetation and debris from pond edges.
  7. Fill water holding pockets in trees with sand or soil.
  8. Change water in birdbaths once a week.
  9. Make sure window and door screens are closed tightly.
  10. Drill drainage holes in the bottom of outdoor containers such as trash and recycling bins.

Don't worry about chemicals, there are alternatives to DEET-based products. Plant oils such as lemon eucalyptus, citronella, peppermint, and cedar wood have been found to repel biting insects such as mosquitoes. Such solutions are not only better for humans and animals, but smell better and can be produced with sustainable practices.

Large-scale spraying of hard chemicals is not the only solution to pest problems. Before going nuclear, consider more eco-friendly preventative measures such as cleaning and maintenance that removes potential pest habitats and food supplies.

Prevention is key! Use these techniques to prevent mosquito outbreaks on your property.
