    • 1). Bury strips of hardware cloth 2 feet deep in the ground in the area where you plan to plant vegetables. To create mounded beds, lay hardware cloth on the ground and cover with soil and compost 2 to 3 feet deep. The cloth will create a barrier to keep gophers from reaching the vegetables underground.

      Plant annual grains, such as rye and winter wheat, next to the vegetables. According to Pest World for Kids, gophers don't like to eat these plants, so the presence of the grains may deter gophers from venturing farther into your garden.

      Lay six inches of coarse gravel at the bottom of the bed as a barrier to gophers. Spread the gravel out and shovel the garden soil and compost over it. Gravel is inexpensive when bought in bulk, rather than by the bag. Many businesses will deliver truckloads of gravel to your home.

    • 4). Catch the gopher in a live trap and relocate it away from any residential areas. If your community has a nature center, animal control officer or wildlife rehabilitator, ask them for advice on how to get the gopher safely away from your vegetable garden.

    • 5). Bait your garden with strychnine treated grain. This is the most common kind of bait, and is lethal with one feeding. These may be purchased at any garden center.
