About Jamaican Weddings

    Geography

    • Beaches in Jamaica provide a romantic atmosphere for your wedding, and the diversity of the country's landscape offers exciting honeymoon adventures. Negril, on Jamaica's western tip, is a popular wedding location due to its famed stretch of approximately seven miles of beach and access to multiple activities and restaurants. Ocho Rios on the northern coast, another popular destination, does not have beaches extending as far as in Negril, but beaches here are private for most resorts and you can take advantage of many island excursions. If you are looking for a more secluded atmosphere, the Westmoreland and Savanna La Mar area on the south side of the island has a beautiful shoreline without the feel of a busy tourist destination.

    Types

    • There are many types of weddings in Jamaica. One of the most popular types is the all-inclusive resort wedding. This provides easy access to customizable wedding packages as well as providing accommodation for any guests. Smaller, privately owned hotels also exist along the beaches of Jamaica that provide a more intimate atmosphere. Planning may be more time-consuming, but if this better fits your idea of the perfect wedding it may be worth it.

    Features

    • Weddings in Jamaica include most of the things you can get in your hometown (minus the long guest list and large party). Many brides choose to be wed under gazebos on the beach or on piers over the water. You can choose your flowers, music and food. There is the traditional procession of the bride followed by the exchange of vows. The reception can consist of a plated dinner, buffet or simply cake with champagne following the ceremony.

    Considerations

    • Be sure you have an up-to-date passport. You can get a marriage license through the Ministry of National Security in Kingston, Jamaica. You must have this before you travel to the country. Ask the hotel or resort to assist with this. Also, you'll need to arrive at least one full day before your scheduled wedding date and time. While you may choose to hold your wedding alone, you will need at least two witnesses to sign for the event.

    Expert Insight

    • Pay attention to the weather when planning a wedding in Jamaica. Avoid the hurricane season (June 1 to November 30, peaking in August and September). Consider a mid-morning or early-afternoon wedding time, since mid-day often brings tropical showers in most locations around Jamaica. While they don't last long, they could ruin an afternoon wedding. Consider guests' ages if you're planning your wedding at an adults-only resort. Children should be able to attend, but it is likely they will need to stay elsewhere if they are enjoying a vacation in addition to your wedding.
