It has an endless array of holiday destinations such as hill stations, beaches, deserts, backwaters etc.
All these charming places attracts thousands of tourists every year from around the globe.
India has also a great variety of hill stations for instance hill stations which are popular as an adventure site, hill stations which are renowned as Hindu pilgrimage site or hill stations which are famous for their Buddhist monasteries.
Ladakh, Dharamshala, Lahaul and Spiti, Darjeeling and Tawang are some of the hill stations in India which are revered as a Buddhist Pilgrimage site.
These famous hill stations has some beautiful monasteries which are always crowded by Buddhist monks and Buddhist believers.
Ladakh:- Ladakh which is often called as "Little Tibbet" is a barren mountainous region situated at an altitude of 9800 ft above sea level in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Maajor portion of Ladakh's population is keen follower of Buddhism.
The largest town of Ladakh is Leh which has some outstanding monasteries of historic significance such as Hemis gompa, the largest monastery in Ladakh, Shanti stupa, Sankar gompa, Namgyal Tsemo gompa, Alchi gompa, Lamayuru monastery, Shey Monastery, Likir monastery, Spituk monastery and Thiksey monastery.
These monasteries are fine repositories of Buddihist thangkas paintings, art and artifacts.
Dharamshala:- Dharamshala is one of the breathtaking hill stations of Himachal Pradesh.
It is situated in the Kangra valley in the Dhauladar mountain.
Dharamshala is also called as "Little Lhasa" and it is the headquarter of Tibetan Government in exile.
Dharamshala is one of the most popular Buddhist pilgrimages site in India.
It is also the residence of His Holiness of Dalai Lama.
Every year he spreads his teachings from this Dharamshala only.
Some of the pious monasteries in Dharamshala are Namgyal Monastery,Tse-Chok Ling gompa, Dip Thekchen Choeling Monastery, Tashijong monastery, Sherabling monastery, Bir monastery, Norbulingka monastery.
Lahaul and Spiti:- Lahaul and Spiti are two remote and barren Himalayan valleys of Himachal Pradesh.
These two places are lying on the Indo-Tibet border and famous for their beautiful Buddhist monasteries.
They have unmatched beauty of high mountains, snow-capped mountain peaks, rugged rocks, passes, massive glaciers, lakes and hilly rivers.
Both the valleys are famous for splendid Buddhist art and culture.
The monasteries of Lahaul-Spiti has rich collection of ancient murals, thankas, woodcarving and golden images of Padmasambhava.
Some of the famous monasteries of these valleys areTabo Monastery, Dhankar Monastery, Tashigang Gompa, Kye Monastery andKhardung Monastery Darjeeling:- Darjeeling is one of the picturesque hill station situated in northern West Bengal perched at a height of 7000ft above sea level.
Due to its temperate climate this hill station is always crowded with loads of tourists through out the yaer.
Darjeeling is famous for two of the world's most adorable things namely Darjeeling tea and Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
It is also famous for some of the charming Buddhist monasteries such as Guru Shakya Monastery, located 8km from Darjeeling at a place called Ghoom.
The Guru Sakya Monastery is an old monastery of the Shakya Order.
Druk thubten sangag, Bhutia Busty monastery, Yiga-Choling monastery, Yolmowa Buddhist Makdhog monastery.
