     With all the stories in the news every week it seems, about identity thieves hacking into big retailers computer systems and stealing millions of customers personal information, we might get the feeling that identity theft prevention is a waste of time, they're going to get my information anyway.

• Locking up our documents like Social Security cards, birth certificate, marriage license, extra credit cards, also don't carry your Medicare card unless you need it that day (it has your social security number on it).
• Shred anything that you're throwing out if it has any personal identifiers on it like bank statements, credit card statements, pre-approved credit cards.
• Use online bill paying and request electronic billing instead of paper. Pick up new checks at the bank and take your outgoing mail to the post office. This way there's much less for identity thieves to steal from your mailbox that will benefit them.
• One trick thieves have done is open up a gasoline pump and place a skimming device inside which captures your card information and pin number. The best way to avoid that is pay inside with your card or cash.

       With these identity theft prevention techniques we can avoid the most common ways identity thieves use to steal bits and pieces of our identity.
