How to Install Front Shocks on a 1996 SS Chevy Impala

    • 1). Raise up the front of the vehicle using the jack and set it on the jack stands. Make sure that the vehicle is solidly on the stands before crawling underneath it. Take off the front wheels using the tire iron and set them out of the workspace.

    • 2). Clamp the vise grips onto the top of the shock to hold it in place. Unbolt the top of the shock from the frame using an open-end wrench while holding the vise grips to stop the top of the shock from turning.

    • 3). Unbolt the bottom of the shock from the lower control arm using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Slide the shock out through the lower control arm and out of the vehicle.

    • 4). Slide the replacement shock into the lower control arm and secure it to the arm using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reinstall the top mount using the vise grips and an open-end wrench.

    • 5). Reinstall the front tires using the tire iron, then raise the vehicle off of the jack stands using the jack and place it back on the ground.
