How to Organize Financial Statements
- 1). Make a file folder for your financial statements for each month of the year. If you do not have many statements coming in every month, you can make a file folder for each calendar quarter instead.
- 2). Make a file folder for bills due and a file folder for bills paid. Having a separate folder for your paid bills can prevent you from having to file your papers more than once a month.
- 3). Make a pile of all your statements. Have a trashcan close where you can throw away junk mail and circulars when you sort your statements.
- 4). Put your unpaid statements in the folder for bills that are due. If you have many statements, you can make more than one folder for your due bills and further organize your statements by the week or day they are due.
- 5). Move the statements to the bills paid folder after you pay them.
- 6). Once a month -- after you pay the last bill due for the month but before the new month starts -- file all of the paid statements in the folder for that month. File the folders sequentially in your file storage container.
