Anxiety Treatments - Always Be Prepared
The best way and in my opinion the only way to conquer panic attacks is to take back control of your life and the best way to do that is to be prepared.
The first step to taking back that control is to learn some simple but effective techniques starting with learning how to consciously breathe.
This may sound obvious but many people when they have a panic attack, often feel so overwhelmed that they forget to simply breathe properly.
Many doctors will tell you that taking control of your breathing is often the fastest way to calming any anxiety in your body, whatever the cause.
So step number one should be for you to research some breathing exercises and start practicing them every day.
Don't wait until you actually have a panic attack, instead learn calming breathing techniques now and practice for a few minutes at least twice every day.
By doing this they will soon become second nature and you will be able to instigate them at will.
Meditation is something else that you should take time out to investigate as it can be extremely effective in helping overcome panic attacks.
Now I realize that it may be difficult for you to even contemplate meditation when you are having a panic attack, however I am not advocating you get into the lotus position in the middle of the shopping mall.
What I am suggesting is that learn simple calming meditative procedures that you use anywhere.
Another great way to prepare for a panic attack is to simply know your triggers.
Do you have a specific phobia? Is excess stress your downfall? Do certain situations seem impossible for you? Knowing what triggers a panic attack won't mean that you will necessarily avoid those situations but you will take control and therefore minimize them.
You should also take practical steps to arm yourself for the onset of an anxiety attack including making sure that you are carrying any medication that you may need and having it easily accessible.
When you leave the house go prepared by making sure you have to hand any telephone numbers you may need including where applicable your doctor, advisor or close family member, who can talk you through the problem.
Often just a friendly recognizable voice together with controlled breathing can quickly reduce the anxious symptoms.
I would also advise you to prepare what I call a panic bag and carry it with you every time you go out.
Again this bag should include any medication that you may need and most importantly written instructions on taking it, just in case you need help from a third party.
Don't limit yourself on what you include in this bag.
It is to help you personally and therefore does not matter what anybody else may think.
Include anything that will help you feel more comfortable and I mean anything, a cuddly toy, religious items, photos, mints, it's totally your choice just remember that comfort is the key word.
