Bread and butter pickles are probably the sweetest pickles out there.
In fact, they are even sweeter than dill pickles.
Normally they're served as part of the main course dishes and more often used in sandwiches, potato salads and hamburgers.
In some cases, people confuse bread and butter pickles for sweet pickles.
Nevertheless, they're made of different ingredients, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, allspice or vinegar are used in sweet pickles.
Bread and butter pickles are also known as sweet and sour pickles.
They are made of the following ingredients.
Fresh cucumbers, onions, ice cubes, salt, white vinegar, sugar, celery seeds, mustard seeds and turmeric.
Basically making this pickles is similar to any other pickles only that ingredients change.
Nevertheless, the recipe is as follows.
Place thin slices of washed cucumbers and onions in a bowl, add salt and put ice cubes in the mixture.
Leave the mixture for about two to three hours and at the same time keep changing the ice cubes frequently.
Generally, putting vegetables in a mixture of salt and water makes them soft thus easy to make pickles.
Next, drain the salty water and wash the vegetables with cold water, add celery seeds, turmeric, mustard seeds, white vinegar, and sugar.
Put in a large bowl and heat while stirring and cook for 3 minutes.
Place the cucumbers and onions in sterilized storing jars, add vinegar and sugar mixture to the jar, run a wooden or metal spoon through the mixture to remove any air gaps trapped inside and seal the jar air tight.
Boil the jar in water bath for five minutes and then let it cool.
Finally, store it in a cool dark place for two months, after which the pickle will be ready.
