How to Change Fork Oil
- 1). Loosen and remove the cap from the outer tube. Slide the tube down and turn the fork upside down and allow it to completely drain. Use your 17 mm wrench to hold the lock nut in place under the cap. Pull the spring and rebound adjuster rod out and clean it with a rag.
- 2). Secure the fork tube into the vice and pull the piston rod out of the fork. Use a 14 mm allen socket and an air impact gun to loosen the bottom adjuster bolt. At this point, the cartridge should slide out of the fork tube. Complete this process slowly to prevent oil from squirting all over the place.
- 3). Clean the inner tubes cartridge and remove the old oil and any debris that may remain on any of the parts. Reassemble the parts once they are clean and dry by placing the outer tube back into the vice. Continue by inserting the cartridge into the tube and using your hands to gently tighten the compression adjuster into the fork.
- 4). Stand the tube up and insert the rebound adjuster rod into the tube and fill it with fork oil. When the fork is full, stroke the piston rod up and down in the tube until the cartridge is filled with oil. Do not re-attach the spring until the oil level has been set and each of the aforementioned pieces have been exposed to the new oil.
- 5). Set the fork height according to your personal preferences. The general range for most riders is 90-115 mm and changes depending on how soft or hard the rider likes the forks. Reset the rebound adjuster and forks back to its original place. Tighten the pinch bolts to 14 and 12 ft pounds (top and bottom, respectively).
