With the economic climate in the UK looking glum and holidays in Europe becoming more expensive because of the unfavourable exchange rate against the euro - many Britons are looking further afield for their travels this year.
Britain has always had a close affinity with India through their shared history and love of food and sport.
It's no wonder that India is becoming one of the most popular destinations for holidays this year.
As well as incredible food and culture, India has a lot to offer for every type of tourist.
For sunbathers and those in search of a little slice of paradise, the beaches of Goa are a must-see.
Known worldwide, these beaches are seen in many advertisements because of their white sand, clear seas and beautiful palm trees.
The beaches of Goa are split into two sections - the northern beaches are livelier, with parties and carnivals, while the southern beaches lend themselves better to relaxation and solitude.
Beaches in India are also great places for adventure seekers.
As well as swimming, these shores offer great opportunities for activities such as water skiing, scuba diving and banana boat riding.
You don't have to travel far in India to find an opportunity to be entertained and Indians have a long history of sports and games.
The national sport is field hockey although cricket is by far the most popular.
In both, the men's national teams have achieved great success.
The field hockey side has won more Olympic gold medals than any other nation, including a remarkable run from 1928 - 1956 when they won six gold medals and remained unbeaten in their first 28 years.
Indian cricket - as well as having a rich history - is on the forefront of the current Twenty20 craze that is sweeping the sport.
Holidays to India are popular with many tourists looking to find out more about the history and the culture of the country.
Often they find that as well as sport, board games are popular in India with many having been invented there.
The most famous of these is chess.
Precursors to the current version of the game came about during the Gupta Empire of 280 - 500 AD, deriving from the Sanskrit word for "army of four corps".
By the 10th century it had spread to the Far East, Europe and North Africa.
Chess is a game associated with royalty and intellect, but India is also responsible for the creation of a simpler game - Snakes and Ladders.
The game was invented to teach children about the effects of good deeds and bad deeds.
The ladders represent virtues in life - such as generosity and humility - while the snakes represent vices - such as lust, anger and theft.
The moral of the game is that by living well you can find salvation but by being immoral you will be reborn in the lower forms of life - a way of living that should be evident on any trip to India.
India holidays have so much to offer all types of travellers from bustling cities full of culture to picture perfect beaches.
Also, with the pound getting stronger and stronger against the Indian Rupee it is becoming an ideal destination for the savvy travellers in these tough economic times.
