Painting can be a daunting task whether you are painting one room or an entire house. All of the work involved may cause you to be hesitant about getting started, but you can make it easier on yourself. Consider some shortcuts and tips to make the process of painting smoother and shorter. - Protecting other surfaces in the room you are painting is important and can save some time and trouble. Instead of moving it out of the room, cover any furniture with drop cloths so that you can save time. Also, cover the floor to keep splatters off of it. Tape off windows, trim, outlets and light fixtures with painter's tape instead of taking time out to remove them. If you are not painting the ceiling, tape the ceiling where it meets the wall. This can help you avoid accidental application of wall paint to the ceiling.
- Cleaning the surface prior to painting can cut paint application time. The paint (or primer) might not stick correctly if the surface is not clean, causing you to paint over it multiple times in order to get an even coat. Use an oil-removing or degreasing cleanser and apply it with a mop. The long handle of the mop will help to reduce the cleaning time as opposed to hand wiping with a sponge.
- Applying primer may seem like an extra step, but it can actually save you time and paint. Primer prepares the surface of the wall and allows for more paint coverage, helping you to use less paint in the end. Primer is also effective in covering other paint colors and even stained walls. There are primer brands available that will seal and block off cooking, smoke or pet odors that are trapped in wall boards.
