Types

• The state of Florida has native palms such as the Florida thatchpalm, the Key thatchpalm, the Florida royalpalm and the Buccaneer palm. These palms all grow in specific areas along the Florida coast.
  
  

Identification

• The Paurotis-palm of the Florida Everglades is a typical fan palm, with leaves that radiate from a common point and fan out. The Buccaneer palm is a typical feather palm, with leaves as long as 6 feet that look like huge feathers.
  
  

Size

• The cabbage palmetto tree grows as high as 80 feet, while the Florida royalpalm has some individuals that exceed 100 feet in height. The Florida silverpalm is among the smaller palm trees in the United States, growing normally to just 20 feet tall.

History

• South Carolina has the nickname of the Palmetto State; the cabbage palmetto is the state tree, appearing on the state flag and the state seal. The British fleet's attack on a palmetto log fort on Sullivan Island failed on June 28, 1776, cementing the tree in the hearts of South Carolina's citizens.
