Medical Transcription Standards
- In order to learn medical transcription, individuals must be fluent in English and have excellent editing skills in grammar and spelling. Before entering into a program to train to become a medical transcriptionist it is important to be able to type at a minimum of 45 words per minute. The standard speed required to graduate the program is 70 words per minute.
- The most important standard for medical transcription, aside from the speed of typing, is the knowledge of medical terminology. This includes typing up medical reports with the understanding of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, as well as the ability to type Greek and Latin suffixes and prefixes.
- There are no specific educational requirements, however; employers prefer to hire MTs that have completed postsecondary training offered by vocational schools or community colleges. The completion of a two-year associate's degree or a one-year program offering a medical transcription certificate is always recommended, but not required.
