Process of Becoming a Firefighter
- Firefighters must have a high school diploma or GED. Furthermore, many departments require a degree in fire science from a community college. Finally, most departments require emergency medical technician (EMT) training.
- Potential firefighters must pass a physical fitness test and a written test. Depending on the department, testing may only occur once every year or two.
Firefighters must be in excellent shape. While fitness tests differ from department to department, most departments test for agility, endurance and strength.
It is also necessary to pass a written test, which generally assesses applicants on math skills, spelling and grammar skills, map-reading skills, problem-solving skills and communication skills. - Most departments will also run a background check on all applicants. Having a criminal record will almost certainly ruin your chances, but a history of speeding or careless driving may also disqualify you. At this point, an interview may also be held, after which the selection process will begin.
