    Visit Your Bank

    • The easiest way to resurrect your dormant bank account is to simply visit your bank and make a transaction on the account. Whether you deposit new money into the savings account or withdraw a few dollars, simply making a transaction will remove any dormancy notice from the account and reset the counter. As long as you make a deposit or a withdrawal every few months, you should be able to prevent your account from becoming dormant.

    Close Your Account

    • If you no longer wish to maintain your account, visit the bank and ask to speak to a customer service representative. Inform the representative that you wish to close the account and take the proceeds. Check to make sure the balance on the account matches your records, and then sign the account closing form to receive your money.

    Treasury Department

    • If the bank no longer has a record of your savings account, chances are it has been turned over to the treasury department of the state where you live. Find the contact information for your state's treasury department at the state's website. Each state has its own database of unclaimed property, so your dormant bank account should be in that database. Just enter your name into the search box, review the results of your search and follow the instructions on the website to claim your money.

National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators

    • Another option is to visit the website maintained by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators if you cannot locate your state's treasury department. This clearinghouse site provides links to each state's division of unclaimed property. The website address is simply Unclaimed.org. Just click your state on the map to be connected to your state's database of unclaimed property and lost bank accounts.
