The middle 50 percent of those on the earnings scale were making $50,590 to $95,740 per year. The bottom 10 percent had annual salaries of $38,430 and less, and the top 10 percent were making at least $117,210 per year. About 30 percent of statisticians were employed by government agencies. The average salary for statisticians in the federal government was $92,570 per year, significantly higher than for those in state government, at $49,420 per year.

    Salary by Experience

    • The entry-level median salary for statisticians as of March 2011 is $45,928, according to Salary.com. With four to six years of experience, a statistician can expect a significant increase in salary, to a median of $70,062 per year. Salary.com shows the median salary for a senior statistician with at least eight years of experience, or a statistician at level V, at $94,546 per year. The middle 50 percent of these professionals have yearly salaries of $83,745 to $108,821. The top 10 percent are making at least $121,818 per year, and only the bottom 10 percent have salaries of $73,911 and less.

    Geography

    • Salaries for senior statisticians vary significantly with geography. Senior statisticians in Flagstaff, Arizona, for instance, have a median salary of $84,245 per year, while those in Los Angeles, California, earn a median salary of $105,288 per year. Senior statisticians in Omaha, Nebraska, earn a median annual pay rate of $89,003; in Tampa, Florida, $89,049; in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, $91,037; in Austin, Texas, $91,861; in St. Louis, Missouri, $95,151; in Denver, Colorado, $98,806; in Minneapolis, Minnesota, $101,968; in New Haven, Connecticut, $104,465; in Seattle, Washington, $105,183; and in San Francisco, California, $115,042. The top 25 percent of senior statisticians in San Francisco make at least $132,411 per year, and the top 10 percent $148,225.

    Outlook

    • Statisticians can expect average employment growth in this occupation until at least 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Degrees in statistics are valuable for jobs that involve data analysis in fields such as economics, marketing, psychology and engineering. Unlike some other jobs, technological advances boost demand for statisticians. Improvements in computer processing allows these mathematicians to analyze larger amounts of data than ever before.
