Wage Calculator App Offered by Government

The U.S. Department of Labor's wage calculator app allows American workers who suspect their employers of shorting them on wages track their regular hours, break time and any overtime hours.

The free wage calculator app, called DOL-Timesheet, was released in May 2011 for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The Labor Department said it would potentially release versions of its wage calculator for other smartphone platforms, such as Android and BlackBerry.

"I am pleased that my department is able to leverage increasingly popular and available technology to ensure that workers receive the wages to which they are entitled," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "This app will help empower workers to understand and stand up for their rights when employers have denied their hard-earned pay."

How Wage Calculator Could Help in Disputes


Labor Department leaders said the wage calculator will serve as an important tool for workers. Instead of relying on their employer records, workers are able to use the age calculator to can keep their own records.

The wage calculator is expected to be invaluable, for example, during Wage and Hour Division investigations in which employers fail to maintain accurate employment records. The Wage and Hour Division enforces federal labor laws dealing with the minimum wage, overtime pay and record-keeping.

The free wage calculator app is available in English and Spanish.

About Wage Theft


Wage theft is a term used to described the underpayment of workers for the time they put in, whether by neglecting to pay them for hours they worked or not paying them time and a half for their work beyond 40 hours in one week.

According to published reports, the Labor Department's Wage and Hour Division receives more than 35,000 calls for help every year from workers claiming some form of wage theft.

How to Download Wage Calculator


Both the wage calculator app and a printable calendar can be downloaded from the Wage and Hour Division's home Web page at http://www.dol.gov/whd.

For workers without smartphones, the Wage and Hour Division offers a printable work hours calendar in English and Spanish to track rate of pay, work start and stop times, and arrival and departure times. The calendar also includes easy-to-understand information about workers' rights and how to file a wage violation complaint.

Updates to Wage Calculator


The Labor Department said it will update its wage calculator app to allow workers to keeps track of their tips, commissions, bonuses, deductions, holiday pay, pay for weekends, shift differentials and pay for regular days of rest. Those features were not available in the initial release of the wage calculator.
