How to Change Residency for Taxes
- 1). Obtain IRS Form 8822, "Change of Address."
- 2). Check box 1 to change the address associated with your tax account. Enter your name and Social Security number on lines 3a and 3b. If you file a joint return, provide your spouse's name and Social Security number on lines 4a and 4b. If you or your spouse are also changing the name associated with your account, enter the prior name on line 5a or 5b. Ensure that you use the line that corresponds with the name on line 3a or 4a.
- 3). Enter your old address on line 6a. If your spouse also has an old address to change, enter that address on line 6b.
- 4). Enter your new address on line 7.
- 5). Sign and date the bottom of the form. If you file a joint return, your spouse must also sign.
- 6). Mail the form to the address associated with your old state of residency, as listed in the form's instructions. Use the addresses for filers who complete part 1.
- 1). Enter your name and Social Security number in the box at the top of your 1040 tax return. If your file a joint return, enter your spouse's name and Social Security number in the boxes immediately below.
- 2). Enter your new address on the address line.
- 3). Complete the rest of your return and file. The IRS updates your records -- and your spouse's, if you file jointly -- with the new address on your return.
