How to Wire a 15 Amp Receptacle
- 1). Turn the power off to the 15-amp receptacle in question. Go to your circuit breaker panel and turn the correct breaker to the "Off" position. Test the outlet in question with a circuit tester to verify the power is now disabled.
- 2). Unscrew the cover plate from the 15-amp receptacle and set aside. Unscrew the receptacle from the electrical box and gently pull it out and uncoil the electrical wiring.
- 3). Loosen each wire from the receptacle by turning the hold-down screws counterclockwise with your screwdriver. A typical receptacle contains three wires -- hot (black), neutral (white) and ground (green).
- 4). Set the old 15-amp receptacle aside and connect the wiring to the new receptacle. The black wire goes to the brass or gold terminal, white to silver terminal, and green to green terminal. Ensure the screws are tight so that the wires do not come loose at a later point.
- 5). Push the 15-amp receptacle into the electrical box and tighten down the screw on the top and bottom of the outlet to secure it in place.
- 6). Fit the cover plate back into place and tighten its screw down.
- 7). Flip the circuit breaker switch to the "On" position and test your outlet for power.
