How to Change a 2001 Ford Escort Alternator
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery terminal, using a wrench. Remove the coolant reservoir bottle, using a socket. Place the ratchet with the appropriate socket on the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley. Pull the tensioner away from the belt. Lift the belt off the alternator.
- 2). Remove the battery plus cable from the back of the alternator, using a wrench. Pull the plastic field wire connector out of the alternator. Remove the upper and lower alternator bolts with a socket, and remove the alternator.
- 3). Install the alternator into its bracket, and tighten both bolts. Install the battery plus cable, and tighten the nut with a wrench. Push the field wire connector into its slot in the alternator.
- 4). Install the ratchet on the tensioner. Pull it away from the belt, and install the belt on the alternator pulley. Release the tensioner. Install the negative battery terminal, and tighten it with a wrench.
