Housing Adaptation Grants for People with a Disability
- The Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities program provides grants to increase the number of supportive housing units occupied by disabled tenants. Grants fund home adaptation and modification projects to help tenants with disabilities get around in their homes. This grant program is funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
- Disabled veterans are eligible to apply for grants from the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to cover home adaptation projects. As of June 2011, the VA has three grant programs for disabled veterans: Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA), Special Home Adaptations (SHA), and Specially Adapted Housing (SAH). The HISA program awards grants up to $6,800 for veterans with service-related disabilities, and $2,000 for those with non-service-related disabilities. The SHA and SAH programs, available to veterans with service-related disabilities only, award grants up to $12,756 and $63,780, respectively.
- Public and Indian housing authorities needing financial assistance to revitalize their housing units can apply for grants through the HOPE VI program, funded by HUD. Grants are used to acquire land, demolish old buildings no longer deemed safe to live in and construct new housing units. Grants are also used to renovate and remodel housing units to accommodate the elderly and people with disabilities. The HOPE VI program supports community services helping residents displaced by the revitalization efforts find new places to live, as well.
- Shelters needing funds to renovate and make housing adaptations to accommodate homeless individuals with disabilities can apply for grants through the Shelter Plus Care program. Funded by HUD, grants are used to provide housing, as well as disability support services. Rental assistance is also available under the Shelter Plus Care program. Housing is also extended to the families of disabled homeless individuals.
