Allstate is testing if computer video games can improve the mental agility in people over 50 Question - Can playing computer video games increase the mental agility in people over 50 years of ago to turn them into better drivers? Allstate Corporation wants to find out, and see if the answer is in fact yes, because it may actually offer discounts to people who play the computer video games.
Allstate as a new pilot program called InSight, which will offer specialized computer video games to around 100,000 people in Pennsylvania aged 50 to 75.
This it will be tracked the number of hours a drivers plays the games.
"Then the group's accident rates will be compared to a control group of people who do not play the games" stated Allstate.
Keep in mind the games are not all specific to driving.
The games are designed to reverse age-related cognitive decline and improve visual awareness.
For example a computer video game called "Jewel Diver" has players keep track of the number of jewels that show up on the screen for a moment before they hidden by the fish swimming around in the game.
When the fish stop moving the the player click on the fish hiding the jewel.
Over time the game increases in difficulty and more fish appear on the screen.
"Allstate recommends that drivers complete at least 10 hours of training.
" The project has been given as a free option to the 100,000 people in Pennsylvania.
Allstate will also decide by next year whether or not to roll out the project to our states.
Tom Warden, an assistant vice president at Allstate, said "the company chose Posit's technology because it is based on nine years of research into how older drivers' brain fitness might be improved.
" While it is true that people in there 50s and 60s have the the lowest accident rate of all drivers, when the person reaches their mid 60s accident rate tend to climb again and according to Warden he hopes the software can show "significant benefits here - beyond dollars and cents.
"
