Santorini Greece: From Sunrise to Sunset

Santorini Greece is a beautiful getaway locale that is known for its unique landscape and spectacular views. Located in the south of the Cycladic islands in the Aegean, this traditional Greek destination has a storied past.

The island was also called "Strongili," meaning "circular" in Greek, because in ancient times, Santorini was a solid circle. However, the volcano erupted numerous times, creating a semi-circular island with a central bay. In the Bronze Age, a massive eruption caused the collapse of the island, leaving behind the caldera that makes the island's landscape what it is today. Some believe that fabled Atlantis and the island of Santorini are intertwined. The area now consists of a ring-shaped group of islands, including:
  • Thera, which is the largest
  • Therasia, meaning "little Thera"
  • Aspronisi
  • Kameni Islands, the central group

Santorini is home to the two newest pieces of land in the Eastern Mediterranean. Lava from the volcano has created two small islands called Palia Kameni, meaning "Old Burnt Island" and Nea Kameni, or "New Burnt Island." The younger of the two is only 425 years old.

The volcano itself draws thousands of tourists to Santorini each year. It is the perfect stop for a yacht charter. As you near the area, you will see the steaming rocks and the lava formations hardened in the water create a awesome site. Walking across the "lunar landscape" makes one feel like they're in a prehistoric time. Sulfur steam escapes from holes in the earth and you can observe the volcano's crater. A trip to Palia Kameni is unforgettable, as you can immerse yourself in the relaxing hot springs.

The submerged caldera is in the center of a basin of water, around which lie traditional Greek villages. Their houses dot the landscape, as if they hang on the edge of the cliff, each with their brightly colored trim. The white of the houses, the deep blue trim, the black of the surrounding rocks, the blue of the sea – all are picture perfect and breath-taking.

The village of Oia is a well-known place to watch the sunset. In fact, tourists gather there every evening just to see the stunning views as the sun sets in the west. Couples sharing a picnic. Families sitting atop a stone wall. Seniors holding hands as the sky turns red. Space on land is limited, yet yacht charters are a common alternative to viewing the sight without being crowded on land.

A vacation to Santorini Greece will renew your spirit and relax your mind. Take your camera and take your time.
