Wedding Invitation Wording - Getting it Right

Writing a wedding invitation is simple provided you follow a few simple rules.
The basic wording for a wedding invitation is as follows: Mr and Mrs John Griffin request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter Amelia to Mr Graham Pugh at All Hallows Church, Barnsbury on Sunday 13 May at 11a.
m.
and afterwards at The Bull and Boot, Haversham RSVP 12 High Street Maplethorne GU21 2TT There are a few amendments you may need to make, depending on the circumstances.
The basic wording above is suitable when the bride's parents are hosting the wedding.
However, sometimes it is more appropriate for the couple themselves to be named as hosts.
This is particularly common amongst older couples where parents may be elderly, or deceased.
The wording would then be as follows: Miss Amelia Griffin and Mr Graham Pugh request the pleasure of your company at their marriage at All Hallows Church, Barnsbury etc The tradition for the bride's parents to bear the full responsibility of hosting and paying for the wedding is not as strong as it was.
It is increasingly common for both the bride's parents and the groom's parents to host the wedding jointly, in which case the invitation wording would be as follows: Mr and Mrs John Griffin and Mr and Mrs Alexander Pugh request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of Amelia to Mr Graham Pugh etc Of course, there are many other permutations.
If the bride's mother is deceased, her father alone may host the wedding, in which case he is named alone on the invitation.
The same would apply if the bride's father is deceased, i.
e.
the bride's mother would be named alone.
Traditionally, widows are still referred to by the name of their husband (e.
g.
Mrs John Griffin), although this is now a less strict rule than it was in the past.
Finally, if you are having separate guest lists for the wedding and the reception, an invitation to the reception only would read as set out below (for variety, we've assumed the couple are hosting): Miss Amelia Griffin and Mr Graham Pugh request the pleasure of your company at the reception following their marriage The Bull and Boot, Haversham on Sunday 13 May at 12 noon.

Deciding who to invite, on the other hand, is down to you!
